Summer in September

Summer in September

The buzzing fan

stings a cool breeze

in the air conditioned room.

Temps in the eighties still

humidity feels stiff

sweat drips like molasses

michigan summer still lingers

blasting heat brings thundershowers

on the edge of Autumn and yet

Temps in the eighties still

humidity feels stiff

sweat drips salty sugar

its summer in September.

Autumn Announces itself…

Autumn Announces itself…

10/31/14 by Emily Sturgill

Autumn comes in slowly,

creeping temperatures dropping

in Michigan below 50.

The wind does yell.

The wind does howl.

Th chill fills the air

and my cat wants to go outside,

she begins to meow.

a pathetic sound,

a plea which will be

for tonight at least-

Autumn Announces itself

in all its angry growls

and howls of a wind

so fierce that it fills my house.

With the thin crackle, crunching of

paper thin leaves

falling from trees.

Autumn in all her glory,

has arrived, as we settle in

by the fire

about to tell stories.

She is here,

Autumn announces herself.

Thinking things through…

Thinking things through…
the wind conveys the secret
message that
Spring is almost near.

Thinking things through…
as the bulbs begin to bud.
As the air begins to warm and whisper.
The wind sends out call,
to all the flocks of birds-
then to the other animals
both small and tall.

Thinking things through…
I stand in the thick and thin out of
it all.
Trying to catch a Spring breeze
as the smell of grass
and the feel of Sun and Air upon
my bare arm, everything
catches up to me-
in a moment of Awe.

Thinking things through…
this is the time of the year,
to sort through the old,
and embrace the new.

Just taking my time
to gather my thoughts
and think these things through…

Grasping at Straws

Grasping at Straws,

made up of Michigan Rain,

composed of windy, muddy, cold

weather. My feelings, so unlike, myself today

have been all over the map.

Myself, unlike my feelings, has mostly

stayed stationary-cuddled up in my bed,

trying to keep warm.

Sometimes, it seems like there

is a simple and perfect,

bright side to everything.

I can see the Sun try to move past,

the clouds, to brighten even, the darkest day.

Other times, I find I am stuck,

like a car going in reverse,

backwards my memories focus on my

murky past and I wonder why me?

It’s best to try to remain forward

facing the present.

But that’s tough to do,

if you keep glancing behind you,

in fact if you keep looking backwards,

you may miss the best part-

when the Rain finally stops,

and the rainbows come out to play.

Cliches run rampant

Cliches running rampant

in my head, things like, “winter wonderland.” or “all four seasons in one day.” which is the title of a song by Sting, on his CD Mercury Falling or perhaps Mercury Rising-i cannot really recall which, and “Winter Wonderland.” is also a song, i believe…

Cliches running rampant

in my head,

everyone I know it seems was joking,

just the other day, about our State’s weather,

how it seems to be so indecisive it changes its mind,

rather quick, it seems almost somewhat

like a young girl who keeps changing her mind,

on which stuffed bear is her favorite toy!

Michigan seems to say, “Spring!” no no no wait….

“Summer!!” no no no…”Winter?”

“Fall!!!” With Michigan its a crazy free for all.

And the newscasters try to pretend,

the “weather men” or women, that they know whats

going to happen with our crazy weather,

but the truth is nobody knows.

One minute it snows, then the next the Sun graces us,

with its warmth and the flakes,

burn then melt away,

into muddy spring-size puddles.

A few hours later, we could get 6-7 inches,

of the white stuff, truth is you just never do know-

Living in Michigan keeps you,

on your toes.

Big snow flakes

Big snow flakes,

softly tumble down,

as i watch them as they fall-

wondering if i ran outside,

if i could catch one,

they are about the size of a quarter-piece

a coin, with the exception of un-even edges,

cut into individual jig-saw puzzle pieces,

which neatly fit

together, when they hit

the ground.

so pretty to watch, yet ,

tremendously terrible to try to

drive in.

Michigan snow storms are

the stuff, accidents are made of.

Just had a huge one the other day

on I-75, and no one I knew was hurt,

but there were causalities

I just watched it on the news.

It was sad. But these things do tend to

occur and happen, when the

weather gets nasty here,

do not let the pretty flakes fool

you have to be careful,

driving in this weather,

it may look beautiful,

but please remember

beauty does,

kill, sometimes

Feeling hazy

Feeling hazy,

as the Michigan winter weather,

completely fazes me.

I had a job interview today

on the drive there we got the “flurries” followed

by arctic cold blast of air.

But on the way home the Sun,

forgot it was Winter and she came out to play,

thus making it bright and warm.

All my life, I’ve lived in Michigan,

it seems like this is one of the few places,

where you can have all four seasons, in just a

single day…

I’m feeling hazy,

thinking of certain tunes

by the Mamas ans the Papas…

singing and dreaming, under my breath.
