My Adventures into Endometriosis Stage IV land…

Endometriosis is a chronic pain illness that affect 1 in 10 women worldwide.

Basically Endometriosis has no known proven cause and no proven cures. One theory about how endometriosis develops is that it develops while the woman is a fetus in utero. Then there are other theories-one I believe is the Migration theory because it makes the most sense to me and my hubby both. Basically this is a hypothesis that endo starts in the endometrial lining of a woman’s uterus-now the cause remains unknown but the theory suggests that somehow those cells in the body-endometrial lining cells are able to migrate out of a wombs uterus/womb. They then implant in places like the bowels, the ovaries, the sciatic nerves, the back and the legs and of course the pelvis.

My journey began in 2006, when i was diagnosed with an ovarian cysts. Most and many of the obgyns I went too, only wanted to monitor it to see if it would go away? Finally in 2009, a new doctor wanted to try to remove it using laparoscopic surgery. This dr was older and experienced but it just happened she was not experienced with this illness. She was actually a plastic surgeon obgyn. She helped women after they had babies have some strange surgery to make their vaginias appear as if they never had babies before? So she was an expert in that.

After she operated on me she said she could not remove the cyst only drain it and explained it was a chocolate cyst and that meant i had a condition called endometriosis. She sent me to a different surgeon who was an expert in infertility. That led to another operation called a pelviscopy-to see if my fallopian tube worked?  Sure enough one tube was blocked but we were somewhat shocked to discover the other one worked. The other surprise was all of my female organs were literally ‘stuck together” due to my disease. That last surgery was in 2010. Since then I tried many different obgyns and other methods to control my pain or increase fertility. Sadly I did get pregnant in 2011 only to miscarry within six weeks of conception.

I have not see a OBGYN since 2012. My hubby finally pleaded for me to go to one at least for a female check up-pap,breast and pelvic exam.I am debating whether another surgery would help me or not.

In the meantime though I compiled all the endometriosis poetry off my blog last month and wrote a poetry chapbook.

“This is a bright and thoughtful collection of “memoir” offering, a blend/mix of poetry, paintings and photography. This is not a written memoir in story form. Ms. Sturgill’s richly detailed account of thoughts and emotions provides understanding of the thought process and her life experience of being affected by mental illness. To her credit, Ms. Sturgill has her Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Wayne University, Detroit, MI. where she lives with her husband and dogs. The isolation and the loneliness that separates those who are ill, the tangled threads, selling secrets/selling drama. The changing “Love Like This” Sturgill describes the randomness of falling in love with her husband Dean, better together than apart, his unconditional love and support. The longest piece/poem “Unread Book” is uniquely written about the soul/life blood of a book, eventually ending with comparison to the circus and circus clowns. “Falling to Pieces” an acrylic on canvas 1996, is my personal favorite, a soulful portrait of unspeakable beauty.”

4.0 out of 5 stars Interconnecting True Stories, Essay, Poetry and Art.. October 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
” Beginning this second bold and courageous volume of “On the Brink..” is the metaphoric story of the Samurai and Witch. With references to a Zen Master, Gotham City, Batman, Catwoman, etc. this seems to have a juvenile child-like narrative. Next, an “Ode to the Ghetto” my favorite poem in this Chapbook, about Sturgill’s experience of being the only white cashier in an 8 Mile Detroit, MI. Target Store. The racist distain, a white speck on the color wheel of the black universe. “Story” is a combination of metaphoric poetry/essay about the birth of a story from a mother of conception. The words, images, forgotten phrases, eventually become paragraphs. The story savior, rebirth without Christianity, blends into an ongoing revealing comparisons to promiscuity. Words and more single words, seemingly poetry, following a manic run of thought process. In 1986 Sturgill’s favorite aunt died of kidney failure, and had a hard life impaired by alcoholism. This event seemed to set Sturgill’s teen years and family life on a negative, downward spiral. This is darkly and shockingly detailed in: “Ravings of a Lunatic.” Sturgill’s mother bought scotch in gallon containers, her parents fought fiercely and a great deal, yet her father remained the strong, shy, silent type doing almost all the cooking and cleaning. Being bullied at school, and seemingly becoming the family scapegoat over time, and the stressful poor family dynamic, led her to have severe depressive symptoms where she faced further misunderstanding and criticism from her immediate family. Sturgill was prescribed medication from her teen years, and formally diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (manic-depressive illness) when she was 18.”

Everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me. ~ Sigmund Freud‘Yesterday’s Flowers and Other Things: Poetry and Art’ is author/poet/artist Emily Sturgill’s 12th release in her chapbook series. Whether she is describing the surface levels or the deepest intensity of emotional states and experience, her words are daring, fearless, and articulate. There is often a vibrant richness in her paintings, drawings, mixed media/collage. Ms. Sturgill’s photography captures an expression, moment, or a specific place or theme. It is always up to her readers and followers to interpret individual meaning. The opening New Year poem: ‘Resolutions Fall Flatly’ Ms. Sturgill realizes the need to reinvent herself, meaning less coffee and cigarettes, a new year and person. There are several poems about her love of the freshly written, often random, words. Loose Leaf Paper, Poetry, Commercial, The Storyteller, Honeycomb,
‘The Art Therapist’ recalled putting picture pieces together, the light of hope and joy. Shadows carved out of Oak trees. The transformation of mood that meditation can’t achieve: ‘Music Therapy’. “Art Has Left The Building’ tells of the disappearance of inspiration.
‘Yesterdays Flowers'(theme): Flowers blooming secrets in the brittle dryness of winter.
‘She’ who loved Christmas, making cards and calligraphy writing. A loving memorial tribute poem of Ms. Sturgill’s mother.
The following poems describe the downside of mood disorder, the shadows, secrets, and final acceptance. Mania, A Messy Place, My Shadow Self, A Regression.

“Emily Sturgill is an incredibly talented poet and she displays just how skillful she really is in her amazing poetry and art book, “Yesterdays Flowers and other things.” The rhythm and solid flow of each line was perfectly constructed, and demonstrated with excellent writing skills! When you read this book, it will be obvious that the author is well aware of poetry mechanics. I really like the individual style Emily presented in this book as well! In addition to this, every poem I read was understandable and easy to read. They each sparked one, if not several different emotions and everyone knows that every good poetry book must hit you emotionally. Not only does Emily pull you inside of her world with her poetry, “Yesterday’s Flowers and other things”, but some poems beckon you to examine your own reality. I like the poem about the rocks, I use to collect rocks when I was little, so that poem was very interesting and fun to read. 11/15/23 Lucky Rocks. 10/6/13 Loose Leaf Paper is definitely my favorite! Overall, the ending is the key to the entire book! Emily did a great job on this book and I would recommend it to other poets and readers! Specifically, because of the form and technique. Surely, many poets could learn a thing or two.” Read the rest of this review on Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars An Illistrated Tribute to the Creative Spirit……….,January 21, 2014
Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
Spirals of Song and Other Poems is a deeply gratifying tribute to the creative spirit by author/artist Emily Sturgill M.Ed. ~ In the introduction, Sturgill discusses her blog: sexinthekitchensink@wordpress.com, especially grateful for the support of her husband, family, and her 200 plus readers and followers, she hopes to inspire others to draw, paint, “make art”, and write, as she promotes the healing and therapeutic process/effects of creative artistic expression. With her love and admiration for the written word, prose and verbs, awareness of random thought that weaves into a tapestry of words, she writes: “The Muse of Poetry”, “Spirals of Song”, and the addiction to words, where one or two poems a day is never enough.. “Poetry Junkie”.
“The Miscarriage Collages” illustrate the depth of personal loss, in two beautifully done collage pieces, a sharing experience for the benefit of others.
Blending into another form: Random (abstract) Art is illustrated with a bold striking zig-zag painting and another smoother swirl of abstract design. Sturgill explains how (in therapeutic art) emotions color the canvas, the healing that often takes place without the necessity of either the written or spoken word.
“Play Me” a poem of the readiness of musical instruments on standby, is illustrated with clip-art of a violin.
Inspired by the song “Sober” by pop vocalist Pink: “A Pink Poem” is of avoiding the decent into madness that leads to a hospital psychiatric ward. The poem “Love Letter” returns back to the expression of the written word.
Favorite Art Works: ~ Colorful Collage * mixed media 2013 ~ Zentangle * pen/ink drawing 2013 ~ Zentangle #2 * pen/ink drawing 2013 ~ The Peacock * acrylic/mixed media 2012.

This is the shortest volume of poet/indie-author Emily Sturgll’s artist chapbooks. In the opening part she writes: “Poetry distracts me from going over the edge.” Sturgill holds a MFA in art education and art therapy from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. The title of this chapbook is also the title of her blog. I’d like to add, that this chapbook isn’t about sex. Sturgill has written quite articulately with powerful emotional clarity about the daily challenges of living with mental illness, namely Bipolar Disorder – known also as manic depressive illness. Sturgill is a mental health advocate, working in her local community and promotes creative artistic expression through social media and public forum.

In Randomness in the AM: Sturgill discusses the “balance beam” and mood swing of her illness, where in the space of just a few minutes she feels as if she has lived a lifetime. Her medications, lithium, being like the finest of dark chocolate. Seroquel and Klonopin are needed for her mental stability. The awareness that people may speak about her in hushed tones. There are more mentally ill people then most know of, they are often homeless, in prison, or living in Adult Foster Care Homes. Cold Chill: is about the Detroit area cold winters, her concern for the homeless/squatters living in abandoned buildings. “from the inside out” features Ravin Starr: A slick plus size, chain smoking, unwelcome house guest, usually up to no good.. and Sturgill’s alter-ego. Holiday blues are covered in the poem: “Dr. Depression” stopped by pulling a hearse instead of reindeer, bringing fear instead of cheer. The short essay immediately following urges those who face suicidal depression to seek the help that is readily available. “Psychiatrist” is about Sturgill’s experience with therapy, and how her psychiatrist at CMH (Community Mental Health) really helped her, earning her trust and respect. Sturgill writes about her sweetest love for her husband, a unique unicorn, with a balding head and many tough guy tattoos in: “If I Say I Love You”.

Favorite art works include:
Fire and Ice: (painting, 1996), The Black Cat: (altered photography, undated), Gather Rose: (collage, undated)

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy and entertaining read August 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was an exceptionally easy and very entertaining read which is why I believe that it warrants its 5 star review. There were a few editing errors in the book, but they in no way detracted from its appeal and may have even added to it in my opinion. The book deals with the very serious issue of mental illness from the perspective of the author who unabashedly shares some of her thoughts and life experiences. I found the book so riveting that I needed to read it more than once. As a bonus you will also get to see the outstanding artwork of this very talented individual. I would highly recommend this book.

Really like this. It is more than poetry. It is a reality show. You follow
Emily Sturgill through her mornings, her days, her life. You are there.
It is prose-poetry actually. Very neurotic and if you enjoy the neurotic
then you will like this, if you do not, then “beware!”But I loved it.

Book Description

October 7, 2014
This is a collection of roughly 33 poems centering on the theme loosely based on the color Red. It also contains original artwork and is estimated at around 68 pages in length.Colors often invoke images and feelings. Imagery and emotions are the very fabric which poets create poetry. Color invites thought, form and concrete notions. I decided to focus on Red as it is one of my favorites. I can only hope my artwork along side my poetry can inspire or touch readers in a thoughtful focused way. Let’s explore the world of Red, its texture, it’s feelings, right down to its bones. This ebook does contain some mature content.
Please feel free to use the “Look inside the Book.” feature to see if some of the poetry/content appeals to you. $2.99 on Kindle. There is also a paperback version available for $16.99, 8.5×11, white pages with colored images, 68 pages. Available off both Amazon.com and http://www.createspacestore.com : here is that link:  https://www.createspace.com/5013532

4.0 out of 5 stars A Delight of Imagery and Creativity…., May 12, 2014

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Art, Art, Art!!! Before Words.: Volume Two (Art, Art, Art! Before words. Book 2) (Kindle Edition)
“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”.. William Shakespeare

If “Art, Art, Art Before Words: Volume Two” was an oversized hardback, it would be considered a “coffee table book”. This slim striking colorful volume is a delight to the senses! With only one poem, a condensed autobiography, and over 40 images this is a very quick read; this chapbook continues where “Art, Art, Art Before Words: Volume One” left off.

Artist/poetess Emily Sturgill recalls her experience of attending college and completing her education with a serious mental illness (SMI). A brief chronological outline shows her milestones and academic accomplishments. With her husband Dean encouraging her, she graduated with a masters of education in art education and therapy from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. in 2012. Ms. Sturgill lives in the suburbs outside Detroit with her husband and pets.

The poem: “Painting With Fire” is a joyful expression of creativity, beginning with a hearts desire. The rotation of the nightfall, shooting stars, passion and love, the dawn inviting a new day. Shakespeare is quoted from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Hamlet’.

Some of the artworks are from Ms. Sturgill’s earliest college days (1996) to more recent times. My favorites include:
Detroit Landscape: photography.. 2002 ~ Building #3: photography.. 2002 ~ Church: photography.. 2002 ~ Dream: drawing/mixed media.. 1999 ~ Anger: pen/ink drawing.. 1996 ~ Funky Town: photography.. 2002 ~ Goddess: photography/montage.. 2002 ~ Self Portrait: photography/mixed media.. 2002 ~ Flat Planet June: photography/montage.. 2002 ~ Digital Goddess Montage: photography.. 2002 ~ Self Portraits: webcam.. 2014.

Many thanks, and much appreciation to Emily Sturgill for the paperback edition to this beautiful chapbook. I recommend viewing these artist chapbooks on color e-readers for better clarity of the images.
