NEW-RELEASE! Short Stories, prose, art, poetry &fiction…NEW book!!

I just released my first attempts in the short story genre. It is not very long, and it supplemented it with art and poetry-It is roughly 53 pages long. I used to stories I wrote during my BFA under-grad program in a creative writing class from 2003. I also wrote a couple new short stories too. It is now available in the kindle store. I am still a waiting approval on my paperback from the Createspace store.

This is a preview of the paperback book cover.

BookCoverPreview Short StoriesApril2015     There is not too much I can say beyond, that this terrifies me. Short stories have always been fun yet intimidatingly daunting to attempt to write. I love to read them myself. But I am uncertain if I am very good at writing them. Proceed reading with extra caution, because I am primarily a painter & a poet. It requires a different mind set to write a good short story. Although, some might argue, if your a good enough writer you can really write anything at all. If that is true?

Wow!! Wonderful….now pardon me, while I go write the next best selling Harlequin Romance or the next must have 50 shades of grey or Harry Potter…..Um, quite possibly I think those types of writing are very popular & possibly quite wonderful but totally beyond my grasp. I do not read those types of books so I doubt highly I could ever write one!!!! But I do write the way I do, in a surrealistic sideways freak-show type of way-warts and all…

If you check out my new kindle book, please, please, please!! Consider leaving me a review or some feedback on this blog post or on my Authors page: http://www.amazon.com/author/emilysturgill/

Thank you for your time reading this!! Sincere thanks, Emily

Funky Town

CAM00670

I painted this watercolor a couple weeks ago.
I just decided to call it Funky Town because all the buildings were in bright bold colors like the Fauves or Renaissance period “Mannerism”.

I wanted to write a poem about it.
But I wanted it to speak for itself.
The wash of colors, the emptiness of a deserted town, the sky
with troubled and smoky clouds
which danced upon the Sky.

I wanted to write a poem about it.
But I wanted it to speak for itself.
Using visual elements, the added texture of watercolor pencils
sketching in at the last possible minute.

I wanted to write a poem about it.
But I wanted it to speak for itself.
I wanted the eye to dance from left to right.
I wanted the shapes to form words
in your heart and onto your lips…

to say what type of details
were just not right.

I wanted to write a poem about it.
But I wanted it to speak for itself.
But it refused to speak and
all the colors clashed
beneath their vivid might.

I wanted to write a poem about it.
But I wanted it to speak for itself.
I wanted to write a poem about it,
but the words just would not
come out right….

flowers flourish despite the rain…

March Madness,
with a whim and a flurry,
Mother Nature
sings her call.

She calls out to the flowers,
to begin to bud.
She echoes out to the plants,
to begin to grow.

under her ever watchful eyes,
the dance of spring begins with a twirl,
a wave, a recollection of
warm and simple wind.

slowly in our daze of
sheer amazement
winter concaves, collapses, makes room,
for Spring to begin.

and flowers, they flourish
despite the rain,
they refuse to fight the water
instead they drink in the tears
of the Earth- they swallow her secrets
her teardrops of rain.

it makes them
the plants bloated and drunken,
as if by the most scared of wine.

Fools rush pass…

Fools Rush pass-

by Emily Sturgill 2/10/14

Fools gold

sparkles as the sunlit

window curtains bend,sway and crack-

leaving a frosted glimpse

of a patch of light

so strong and bright

reminding me of

pyrite

commonly called:

Fools Gold.

It seems to be fitting,

as it is cold bare winter, bone-chilling

yet the Huge Sun in the Sky

teases us again with bright shiny light-

with no warmth in sight.

I am singing pyrite, pyrite, pyrite!!!

Shameless the Sun as it pours

Fools Gold down on us again.

Check out my other blog too!

I also have a much smaller and highly neglected blog at blogspot: here is a link: http://dirtyfilthybutterflyblues.blogspot.com/2014/02/memories.html

Please Feel free to check it out. There are only about 84 posts on that one. For a while I tried doing both at once, but I get forgetful and I love wordpress so very much it is hard to remind myself to write on the other blog too!

But the poems there are different then the poems here-for the most part at least!

The Waitress served Wisdom.

The Waitress served a hot steaming plate

full of hot open-faced roast beef sandwiches covered in gravy

with a large side order of wisdom.

I never asked for the wisdom-

She just bore it all down upon me

like a welcoming rain

in the hottest heat of summer when there’s been

nothing but draught.

I was doing light reading on medicine and blessings-

putting pieces together

all shimmery and faint.

She caught me off guard with her chatter.

She was older than I

and she was weathered both

by age and time.

Beneath her carved out wrinkles

her eyes seemed to swell upwards-

even twinkle.

She seemed impossibly knowledgable

in things bizarre and highly improbable.

Yet it was wisdom just the same.

You would be surprised how much you can learn,

if you are only willing to quiet down

and listen.

Like a gem in the raw

The waitress shone brightly

as she dashed out a double heaping

of old timey wisdom.

I left her a nice tip on the table,

I never did quite catch her name.

I was in far too much of a hurry-

because it had started to Rain.

I never saw her again, but just so you know-

older people have the most wonderful tales to tell

and they will share them with you,

if you ask a few questions and show them sincere respect,

the are full of all sorts of answers

you just would not expect.

The waitress severed Wisdom.

Soul-compass

To believe

in somethings in which others,

do not-takes Faith, Courage & Hope.

To believe

in the abstract, in the philosophical notions,

of Truth, Charity, Virtue and pure agape Love-

for man, women, child or beast-

To have this forlorn belief that

your actions really do matter.

To have the certainty,

that above all else

you must honor others

as much as you honor yourself–

in some cases, perhaps, even more.

To live with the knowledge,

that you are more than:

a mere breathing machine,

taking up space & air.

But instead something greater,

a part of the cosmos,

a part of Humanity,

a part of shared History.

That whether you accept it or not,

you are part of the

endless sea from here to eternity.

You are something greater,

someone with a beating heart,

and a wondrous, wandering Soul.

If you trust your instincts, your heartbeats,

your wandering Soul,

it will lead the way-

it will show you the compassion

along a compass-

of the right or wrong way,

in which to go.
