Help Wanted: Poets please apply…

I am just tumbling the idea of a collection of poetry of some of my own poems, but also publishing some poetry of some of my http://www.wordpress.com friends. I am unsure of how to go about doing such an anthology? Especially as far as earning any profits…To be fair, I am not looking to cash in on anybody elses’s talents. Instead I like the idea of several of us poets coming together and creating a self published anthology of poetry MORE for self-expression and Self-exposure, publicity if you will….It’s just an idea in the rough.

But I am thinking maybe X amount of poets & 3 poems each + a short auto-bio of each poet and links to other published works or links to poets blog or website…

If this idea appeals to anybody please send me a sample poem and an email introduction to:
sexinthekitchensex@hotmail.com

If I edited this type of book for kindle I would probably price it very low like .99 cents for the ebook.
I’m not too sure if this even interests anybody? But I know some of the poets i follow here have yet to be published. Perhaps being included in an anthology would give them the well needed push to self publish their own stuff.

My proposals is simple-email me a single poem and the first 20 poet’s poems I receive will be asked to be part of this collection. Deadline is whenever I receive 20 entry emails or let’s say the Summer Solstice June 21st Midnight EST. If you are selected-via-I receive 20 poems-I will email those poets ASAP and you will need to submit just 2 more poems and a short auto-bio poet statement.

Well then, let see if there are any fishes biting? Let the Games begin!!

Putting out wild fires

I have had 6 reviews so far as an Author on Amazon.com. 4 of the 6 were high praise. But 2 of the 6 were from the same person making very negative statements on my work, just one in particular, My “Memoirs recalled Madness: a personal account of living with bipolar disorder.” (2013) by Emily Sturgill. This young lady wrote basically that even though she bought my paperback she deemed it unworthy of reading due to grammar errors.

At the time, I was highly offended. But it was also close to the time, when I was becoming hypo-manic in May. I made harsh statements due to being so taken off-guard and did not respond in a professional way. Now there is a second woman leaving negative statements as comments, based on my over-reaction in trying to defend my work.

So I choose to simply re-edit it and re-release it. Then I attempted to apologize to both women.

You, know you cannot please everyone all of the time. I feel lucky to have positive reviews at all. And I have also said even if you have nothing nice to say, that perhaps it would make me a better writer for that. I have never discouraged negative reviews-I think I try to be receptive to any feedback of all kinds.

I don’t know. I still feel shaken up about the whole thing. I still have trouble understanding how someone would pay so much for a paperback then refused to read it due to grammar errors. Like for me, if she had actually read it-which she claims she did not-and judged it poorly on the basis on how I said things or content-what I was writing about THEN wrote a bad review-well then ok BRING IT ON. But to admit you never finished reading it and then review that the whole thing must suck due to errors you found in the first ten pages? Huh? The book is 88 pages long. I know I am more touchy about it, for a few reasons. First it’s based on my real-life story events. As well and as personal as I could tell them. Second, that is not my typical type of writing or genre.I mostly wrote just poems and prose. There’s a reason for that. I do not have the attention span some other Authors do to develop a plot and to really stick with it. Develop characters not to mention a solid beginning, middle and end.

Still, in my defense, I have been told many times that I write well. The responses between the two other woman towards me were just plain ugly.I felt like I was being-cyber-bullied!!! At the same time, I feel they have a right to their opinion. My loving husband disagrees. He reported their comments as abuse to Amazon. He cited them or at least the first person to be making personal attacks. I’m not sure how that works. They did not use obscenities or anything like that they were just both so very mean. My mistake, was ever commenting on the review in the first place-it added fuel to the fire. Now I am trying to put out wild fires. I realize as an Author, or Artist or Poet-you are putting yourself out there. People may not like your work, in fact they may even hate it. But sometimes, it is hard to separate who you are as a person from the work that you do. In spite of all the really wonderful reviews, the bad and ugly reviews stick out like a sore thumb. And that is MY PROBLEM-not theirs. I need a thicker skin.

If any other self-published authors out there have advice on this? Please comment on my blog. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Obviously, I did not run a spell-check and grammar-check before publishing my memoirs. That’s my bad judgement there. I do not really use the spell-check feature when writing poetry or prose, because it’s different. When writing poems you may not want a capital letter at the beginning of each and every line. It annoys me.If there is a obvious spelling error I do fix that.

Am i really getting my panties all twisted into a bunch over what 2 woman said on the internet?? Does that make me the worlds worst, writer, author, artist and poet? Anybody out there have objective advice on taking criticism and handling it well? I would love to hear from you? Please, Please, please…any of my readers feel free to comment on the post. I’m a bit lost. However, I am still working on a new book. I am not going to stop writing over this or anything-even if folks hate it. I’m going to suck it up and keep writing no matter what. Thanks, Emily

Also it would mean the world to me if you do download something, even if its free, would you consider leaving a review on amazon.com for me? Reviews help me piece together,
areas in which i need improvement or areas that i excel at. Reviews also help me in general during the non-promotional periods with other potential readers or buyers of my work.

Just simply giving your opinion is easy enough to do. And even if itsa negative review, there is something i can learn from. If it is a positive review, even better!!! Just be honest and speak your mind, whatever you think, it would help me a great deal!!! I am still very new to self-publishing. And even new to blogging-i only started this blog in nov 2012.

It was a nice suprise when other writers started subscribing to my blog! I was thrilled to even have 20 followers-now i have lost count-but quite a few. Hopes are dashed disappointed merging with depression:

Apparently, they only called to say that they,

“like” me, but not enough to actually “hire” me.

Whipee! I have gotten my fair share of phone calls,

that fall into this category.

She wanted to keep my application on file for future

reference-(so they reject me again? oh boy!) Sure is how I answered.

She also wanted to pass my application along,

to other agencies that they work with-

Sure, great, I said-

as I could feel my brain on meltdown,

the feeling of dread…nobody ever is going to hire me?

wth?

As much, as i try to remain focused and positive,

I keep getting massive and multiple rejections,

at each and every fork in the world…

At the end of our conversation, she could not wait

to tell me what an “awesome artist” I am.

Very talented. Not everybody is so lucky.

as an art therapist, i really disregarded, the compliment.

I felt literally-and still feel-that that is total bullshit.

I did not verbally say that to her,

instead I explained as an Art therapist, I believe that

Everybody has the power to make art- all it takes is practice.

No, no, no she assured me, “You have a Gift.”

Well yes, I do. I have the gift of never finding a damn job…

I’ve been looking over 18 months.

I am either OVER-qualified OR UNDER-qualify.

I can never get it right.

Getting so frustrated,

just wanna give up this dumb fight.

While I’ve been ignoring you…

While I’ve been ignoring you-my dear blog-and my dear readers, I have been working non-stop. I am attempted to publish a book that is only artwork-no poetry. Well, on the plus side I have quite a bit of art to share, on the downside I am more of a “fine” artist as opposed to a “graphic artist” . So my skills as a photographer, need some improvement as well as my ability to correct center and frame images on a page.

Meanwhile it’s a work in progress. I maybe able to get it done sometime this week-but it still needs a lot of love.

It is called,”Art before words.” and it is Volume One of a Two part series. The Series is simply called,”Art,Art, Art!! Before words.”

Volume One covers the mid-1990s- 2006. Mostly my undergraduate years. Volume Two will cover 2006-2013. The Graduate years.

I hope it is interesting to people. I’m not sure how to describe my art, it is as unique, unusual and a bit crazy-just like I am.

But I would rather you judge and drew your own conclusions.

I will let you know once I have it all figured out.cover for art art art before words noback cover art before words3 copy

Looking for reviews, comments and feedback?

About my poetry and artwork chapbooks, I work very hard to make sure that the material on my blog-poems, pictures, ect. is different from my published materials. There are exceptions, when several of you, my dear readers “like” a certain poem or two, I sometimes include those into my artist and poetry chapbooks-but I try to let you know of that fact. 99.5 % of what I publish is new to you.

I do that by maintaining this blog, but also keeping a private journal. Some of the journal poems got posted here-but not most and not all. And when they do I try not to include them in my books because I do not want you to feel cheated in any way.

Also, I could really use your help. If any of you have taken advantage of my free promo periods AND actually read any of my books, on the kindle or as a purchased paperback, I desperately need more reviews. Even if you bought a kindle book. Either way, even if it was a free download, amazon.com/kindle will allow you to review it. I’m trying to get as many reviews as I can, because I feel this may boost actual book sales in my favor. You should get a email from amazon.com asking you if you want to review one of my books if you downloaded it/ or bought it. If not please visit my Authors page: http://www.amazon.com/author/emilysturgill-and you should be able to simply click any of my books you have bought/ or downloaded and rate it on a 5 star scale. Then just write your thoughts a simple paragraph will do. I want honest reviews, I prefer positive reviews, but if you have a negative response that’s ok too. I’m just starting out as a self-published artist/author/poet. I know I have much to learn. I cannot even afford an editor. I do it all myself.

Eventually, I would like to attempt a book of fiction/short-stories. Right now, my concentration, is not the greatest. So I stick mostly to poems, if i feel brave i may attempt some prose.

I also encourage and highly welcome feedback on my blog. If you send me a comment there is a high likely-hood I will post it.

Thank you for reading my blog. I’m glad so many have subscribed so far-it’s almost a village-135 people so far. It means alot to me that you read my dribble-drabble-thought-puddles-of-poetry.
