Book Description

January 22, 2013
This is a blending of art and poetry. It mismatches several years together of poems as a personal mythology. It has a subtitle of the phrase, “word salad” which is a terminology frequently used by those in the mental health field to describe a symptom both those with bipolar disorder (manic-depression) and schizophrenia both share. Word salad is a loose association between words, and the person expresses those words may have rapid speech, flight of speech or some sort of delusional thinking which leads to bizarre speech patterns. As an artist and poet with bipolar disorder, some of my writings do fall into this. Something abstract yet loosely tied together in my minds eye.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful blends of Artistry and Poetry… October 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
“Mythology Seen Through Metaphor…Word Salad” is a thoughtful often sentimental expression of abstract thought and creative design. The poetry and artistry date from 1991-2013. Emily Sturgill is the highly prolific author/poet/artist of Memoirs of Recalled Madness: a personal account of manic-depressive illness. This is one of the numerous artist chapbooks she has published in addition to her memoir. Sturgill completed her formal education at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. She earned her BFA, and MFA in Art Education and Therapy.

Beginning this chapbook, Sturgill explains that she has written under various pen names: Eman Nepp, Zen Stupid, Anonymous S. My favorite is her alter-ego Ravin Starr, an emotionally sophisticated, slick, plus size, goth-like girl, with dark lacquered nails, matching lipstick, and lots of handmade jewelry. “Word Salad” is the first poem, which begins with flights of emotion, ideas, challenges of writing at times not making sense. Word Salad, a “mask of metaphor and memory.” A place of emptiness, a theft of speech, is the poem: “Robbery”, which evolves into the graffiti art of “Spray Can”. This, also a reminder of the empty, abandoned, and blighted homes in many Detroit area neighborhoods.
Sturgill likely accompanies her mother-in-law to an overwhelming medical appointment in “The Proposal”. A brief poem about being locked in a busy mental hospital: “Psych Ward” is telling, about laughing hyenas in a disturbing distracting environment. “Reversal of Fortune”: about being trapped in a looking glass with a plus size instead of a size 2. “Heavens Falling”: A free thought of laughter, drumbeats, and song. The touching sensitive memorial poetry for her Mother: “My Guilty Ghost Fever”, “Poem for My Mother”, “Motherless Daughter”, and “Mother Earth”. The last tribute: “Poem for my Father”.

Favorite art works include: Abstraction: (pen, ink, 2001), Abstraction of a Dragon: (acrylic painting, 1997), Self Portrait: (oil painting, 2003), Watercolor Landscape: (2013), Blue Light: (acrylic, 1996).
Many thanks and much appreciation to Amazon for the Kindle promotional copy. Giving this a 3* rating of GOOD.

What an inspiring beautiful person Emily Sturgil is! I was glad to stumble upon this little book of poetry and paintings. Emily is a woman with Manic-Depressive Disorder but at the end we find out she has a great strong support group which we all need. I enjoyed reading this short snippit into her world, as a psych major I found it very interesting, powerful and awesome. Rock on Emily and I can’t wait to read more. Blessed Be!!

Many thanks to the author for sending me a complimentary copy. I am truly appreciative to have had the opportunity to have read through this book, one of many she has written. Emily herself is open about her mental illness (bipolar disorder). In reading through her works, many poems seem to allow you to climb inside of her head and understand and feel what she is experiencing. The title including Word Salad is very appropriate. Some of the poems are exactly that – a combination of words that could only be put together by this talented writer. Some of the poems I particularly enjoyed are “Poetry Likes to Stalk Me”, “Reversal of Fortune” and “Heaven’s Falling.” As an individual who dabbles in poetry myself I related to “Poetry Likes to Stalk Me” quite well. She puts the words of the poem together in a vivid, meaningful way. She expresses a wide variety of emotion, including grief and loss, emotions which many if not all of us can relate to on some level. Her artwork is a very nice addition to the book adding additional artistry and flair. I particularly like the painting “Watercolor Landscape.” I feel that this author has a knack for poetry and this would make a wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys poetry or colorful writing and artwork or a beautiful addition to your own collection. I look forward to reading more from this author.

THIS NEW RELEASE IS ALSO FREE, MY POETRY-THERAPY-CHAPBOOK ON LIVING WITH ENDOMETRIOSIS STAGE IV.

This link explains a bit about this disease: http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-11318/what-i-wish-everyone-knew-about-endometriosis.html

My Adventures into Endometriosis Stage IV land…

Endometriosis is a chronic pain illness that affect 1 in 10 women worldwide.

Basically Endometriosis has no known proven cause and no proven cures. One theory about how endometriosis develops is that it develops while the woman is a fetus in utero. Then there are other theories-one I believe is the Migration theory because it makes the most sense to me and my hubby both. Basically this is a hypothesis that endo starts in the endometrial lining of a woman’s uterus-now the cause remains unknown but the theory suggests that somehow those cells in the body-endometrial lining cells are able to migrate out of a wombs uterus/womb. They then implant in places like the bowels, the ovaries, the sciatic nerves, the back and the legs and of course the pelvis.

My journey began in 2006, when i was diagnosed with an ovarian cysts. Most and many of the obgyns I went too, only wanted to monitor it to see if it would go away? Finally in 2009, a new doctor wanted to try to remove it using laparoscopic surgery. This dr was older and experienced but it just happened she was not experienced with this illness. She was actually a plastic surgeon obgyn. She helped women after they had babies have some strange surgery to make their vaginias appear as if they never had babies before? So she was an expert in that.

After she operated on me she said she could not remove the cyst only drain it and explained it was a chocolate cyst and that meant i had a condition called endometriosis. She sent me to a different surgeon who was an expert in infertility. That led to another operation called a pelviscopy-to see if my fallopian tube worked?  Sure enough one tube was blocked but we were somewhat shocked to discover the other one worked. The other surprise was all of my female organs were literally ‘stuck together” due to my disease. That last surgery was in 2010. Since then I tried many different obgyns and other methods to control my pain or increase fertility. Sadly I did get pregnant in 2011 only to miscarry within six weeks of conception.

I have not see a OBGYN since 2012. My hubby finally pleaded for me to go to one at least for a female check up-pap,breast and pelvic exam.I am debating whether another surgery would help me or not.

In the meantime though I compiled all the endometriosis poetry off my blog last month and wrote a poetry chapbook.

This is the shortest volume of poet/indie-author Emily Sturgll’s artist chapbooks. In the opening part she writes: “Poetry distracts me from going over the edge.” Sturgill holds a MFA in art education and art therapy from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. The title of this chapbook is also the title of her blog. I’d like to add, that this chapbook isn’t about sex. Sturgill has written quite articulately with powerful emotional clarity about the daily challenges of living with mental illness, namely Bipolar Disorder – known also as manic depressive illness. Sturgill is a mental health advocate, working in her local community and promotes creative artistic expression through social media and public forum.

In Randomness in the AM: Sturgill discusses the “balance beam” and mood swing of her illness, where in the space of just a few minutes she feels as if she has lived a lifetime. Her medications, lithium, being like the finest of dark chocolate. Seroquel and Klonopin are needed for her mental stability. The awareness that people may speak about her in hushed tones. There are more mentally ill people then most know of, they are often homeless, in prison, or living in Adult Foster Care Homes. Cold Chill: is about the Detroit area cold winters, her concern for the homeless/squatters living in abandoned buildings. “from the inside out” features Ravin Starr: A slick plus size, chain smoking, unwelcome house guest, usually up to no good.. and Sturgill’s alter-ego. Holiday blues are covered in the poem: “Dr. Depression” stopped by pulling a hearse instead of reindeer, bringing fear instead of cheer. The short essay immediately following urges those who face suicidal depression to seek the help that is readily available. “Psychiatrist” is about Sturgill’s experience with therapy, and how her psychiatrist at CMH (Community Mental Health) really helped her, earning her trust and respect. Sturgill writes about her sweetest love for her husband, a unique unicorn, with a balding head and many tough guy tattoos in: “If I Say I Love You”.

Favorite art works include:
Fire and Ice: (painting, 1996), The Black Cat: (altered photography, undated), Gather Rose: (collage, undated)
Many thanks and much appreciation for the Kindle promotional copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy and entertaining read August 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was an exceptionally easy and very entertaining read which is why I believe that it warrants its 5 star review. There were a few editing errors in the book, but they in no way detracted from its appeal and may have even added to it in my opinion. The book deals with the very serious issue of mental illness from the perspective of the author who unabashedly shares some of her thoughts and life experiences. I found the book so riveting that I needed to read it more than once. As a bonus you will also get to see the outstanding artwork of this very talented individual. I would highly recommend this book.

Really like this. It is more than poetry. It is a reality show. You follow
Emily Sturgill through her mornings, her days, her life. You are there.
It is prose-poetry actually. Very neurotic and if you enjoy the neurotic
then you will like this, if you do not, then “beware!”But I loved it.

I hope if any new readers choose to download this short chapbook that they enjoy both the poetry and the artwork.
